Interview: LectroLips

One of those days that I was looking for new music I came across with this duo of electronic music and got hooked with some of its songs, today I have the opportunity to present their music with a short interview, they are Leo and Ant, the amazing duo LectroLips.

So, tell us, who are LectroLips?

We are Leo and Ant from London, UK. We've been writing and recording as LectroLips since 2009.

I love the band name, where it come from?

Ant: Thanks! Our music is electronic and Leo has big lips! We also liked the cheeky/sexy imagery of lips so we wanted to incorporate the word 'lips' in there somewhere.

What are the advantages of being an independent artist?

Leo: Being independent gives us a little bit more freedom. It also takes some of the pressure off when recording music. Although we set ourselves personal goals, we don't have any deadlines. We are also able to release our music for free as soon as it's ready. We don't have a manger or PR so effectively we are in control. We do everything ourselves including the photography and artwork for all our releases.

What elements inspire you when you’re writing and producing a new song?

Ant: We often write and record in different ways. Sometimes Leo will work on a backing track and then I'll start playing around with lyrics and ideas. Other times we start by having a 'jam' and see where it leads. If something isn't working or we're not feeling it then we move on pretty quickly. 

Your music it's a really cool mix of electronic sounds, with some pop and 80's influences, How you define your sound?

Leo: Ultimately we make pop music. Our earlier material was very much inspired by our fondness for the 80s, but as time has gone on we've become more confident in our work and are always keen to experiment. We don't deliberately stick to any genre - we just do whatever comes to us. But we do love electronic sounds and synths so I guess that our music falls into the electro-pop genre. One thing we were surprised about was the funky element that comes through in our music sometimes, as we never set out to do anything funky.

What type of music or bands have influenced on your sound and music?

Ant: I grew up listening to Madonna so she has been a big influence. Leo is a classically trained pianist, so his early influences were classical. At the moment we're listening to a lot of disco (Donna Summer, Chic, Abba) as inspiration for our EP, but my musical taste is so varied, as is Leo's. I like everything from Reggaeton to Easy Listening. Leo's inspired by David Bowie, Prince, Abba and the Carpenters, amongst many others.

What's next for LectroLips?

We're finishing up writing and recording songs for our forthcoming EP, 'Disco Brief' which we plan to release as a free download towards the end of the summer. We'd love to do a music video for one of the tracks too. We're always working on new material and are interested in writing for other artists. Our music has been used on TV here in the UK (via Sentric Music) so we hope to get a few more 'syncs' in the future.
