As usual on the blog, not only is good to talk about those artists with commercial success but also give credit to those young people and independet artists who start to show their music differently, previously on the blog we talked about Simon Curtis and Rochella Danishei and this time BePop is presenting a new artist, and not just the pleasure of show her music but have a great interview and know more about the lovely Jackie Scott.
who is Jackie Scott?, Jackie Scott is a pop star in the making. This talented New York-based recording artist may be flying under the radar right now, but with a set of lungs like Pink and a songwriting style that's party electro-pop (with some surprising substance) she's about to take the world by storm.
BePop:What are the advantages of being an independent artist?
Jackie Scott: I get to do whatever I want! As an independent artist, I can be creative and really experiment. I can change direction at anytime. My first two songs, Superstars and Love Sick, are both dance/pop with bit of rock feel to them. But right now I'm working on a track that is just completely different. The whole sound is edgier. I knew I was on the right track when my mom seemed totally uncomfortable with the lyrics (laughs) - it's not Disney that's for sure! And I'm glad that I can do that as an artist. I'm glad I can let my creative side wander and people can judge me for better or worse and it really doesn't make much of a difference either way. Of course, I do hope people like whatever I'm doing!
Jackie Scott: Getting my music out is a lot of work, but really exciting. So much goes into it that it becomes a very personal project. It feels like so much is at stake and I wonder will people like it and relate? Will they like it more than my last song? Will they share it with friends? Will they download it? Even silly stuff, like, will I get more fans on facebook? But when people love my music, all of the hard work pays off and I'm the happiest person in the world.
I especially love knowing my music is playing at a party. Like, the other day I was at this bar Green Rock, near where I live, and the DJ played one of my songs. All of my friends were screaming and singing along - as best they could after a few drinks at least! To use a Lady Gaga lyric, I was so happy I could die and be alright.
BePop: What elements inspire you when you're writing and producing a new song?
Jackie Scott: For me, writing a song is all about the lyrics and melody. A hot beat is really important, too, but I write lyrics first. Randomly, I'll be in the shower, or driving or waiting for a the subway and thinking about little moments and life experiences, which leads to daydreams and then words just get connected in ways that turn me on. So I write them down or just start to sing them out loud. Next thing I know, I have a song. I get inspired by people, like my friends and by relationships past and present. I'm really interested in vice as a theme, too, like anything indulgent, dirty and fringe, so some of my new material reflects that more. Musically, right now I love wild unpredictable synth, grimy bass and chopped up, manipulated vocals.
BePop:Tell us about your single Love Sick.
Jackie Scott: I wanted to write a song about going out and clubbing and being involved with a guy who is sort of like a weekend thing. We have great physical chemistry and see each other out all the time and sometimes mess around. But it will never be much more than that, which makes me upset. Of course, that won't keep me from going out because I love dancing and also because I'm hoping to run into him! The other link in the song is the similarity between the way love and music both physically affect the body. Both can get your pulse racing.
BePop: Have you listened to some Latin American artists or songs?
Jackie Scott: Well the obvious artists, like Shakira, who I love! The first album that broke her in the U.S. is still my favorite of hers. The best track is "Eyes like Yours". My friend turned me onto a cool Mexican act, Rodrigo y Gabriela. They're really entertaining. And I love reggaeton but I don't know if that counts as Latin American. Does it?
BePop: What is the song that you can't stop listening right now.
Jackie Scott: Well, honestly, my next single! It's called Train Wreck and it's my baby. I'm obsessed with it! Besides that my other obsessions are the Britney Spears album, M.I.A.'s Vicki Leekx mixtape and the Proper Villains remix of Bass Down Low (the Cataracs featuring Dev) - it's ridiculous!
BePop: What's next for Jackie Scott.
Jackie Scott: My new song, Train Wreck, will be out soon. Like within the next few weeks, maybe sooner. I'm also planning a photo shoot and music video. And I'm getting ready for some live shows. If you're in the New York area, you should come!
