I'm Vela, ;) I'm a female pop singer/songwriter from Liverpool, UK.
What are the advantages of being an independent artist?, The advantage of being a solo artist is that you can creatively express what represents you as an individual. I've been in a band before and it's brilliant, but you always have to be aware of the fact that the material you put out has to represent all 5 people in the group etc. Being a solo artist you just have to be true to yourself and it's easier to make your own decisions.
How you define the sound of your music?, I would describe my sound as pop but I take influence from lots of different genres. I think that's the great thing about pop music...it doesn't really have strict rules about what it is. I just try to write music that represents me as a person.
Can you say your music and lyrics reflect what you are living in this moment?, Yes definitely. The last couple of years I feel I have experienced a lot as a person. I swear I've felt every emotion possible...good and bad! All my lyrics come from personal experience on some level.
About Warrior, what inspired you to make this song?, I wrote Warrior in a horrible cheap hotel just outside of London. The room was damp, dark and I was on my own with very little money. So I just shut my eyes and thought about positive things. I thought about being brave and the people that inspire me to achieve things and carry on working hard. I liked the idea of people being each others Warriors/inspiration and giving each other strength. So I guess the song is my way of trying to inspire the listener to achieve whatever it is they want to achieve. In the dead of night...I'll be your Warrior! haha :)
What type of music or bands have influenced on your sound and music?, I take influence from lots of artists. There's too many to name really. I like artists who push boundaries and push themselves creatively. I love strong female artists - Girl power! I think it's good to take influence from others but the moment you start imitating people it becomes a negative thing. You've just got to be yourself.
What you feel when you get good reviews and comments about your music?, It inspires me to work even harder. I always want for people to be happy, so when someone writes and tells me my music has made them happy it's a great feeling!
What's next for Vela?, Well I'm currently finishing writing my debut album. In 2012 I will definitely be releasing lots of new material. I'll also be putting my live show together! I'm really excited about the future.
