Interview: Divine Knights

Rare is the occasion that comes an artist and their music conquers you completely, this was the case with Divine Knights. A mixture of electro-pop, dark sounds and lyrics that mix reality with fantasy and make this duo worthy to be in our playlist. Divine Knights present their music, tell us about their creation and inspiration.

To begin, Who are you, who's behind Divine Knights?
We are Gerard Anthony (the ginger with the low voice) and Beef (The brunette with the high voice). We are best friends from Sydney and have been making music together over the last 3 years. Gerard is from an acting/singing background while Beef is from a music background, together it just works and we have a huge amount of fun being DIVINE KNIGHTS. We feel really lucky, we get to make art and perform constantly and hang out with each other while we're doing it!

How do you define the sound of your music?
Hmmm, that's always a tricky question to answer as we are 'inside' the music so it's hard to know what others are hearing or getting out of it sometimes. But we think we sound epic, sparkly, melancholic and euphoric, romantic and fierce! We love creating our tracks like little pieces of theatre that take you on a journey. We want to be more than just pop singers, we want to be creators!

How is you process to make a song?
It tends to change all the time but Gerard Anthony is always writing lyrics, creating little stories that could one day become a song. When we go to create a track we are usually inspired by something, a sound or a story or an experience. Beef will start paying with sound while Gerard Anthony Starts penning some lyrics, from there it's totally collaborative, trying things and recording bits and pieces then refining everything till we are happy with the work we have created. It's usually a pretty fluid process as we are (almost) always on the same page.

What makes your music stand out from others electro-pop bands?
More than anything it would be our vocals. There are other male electro-pop acts around but they are usually headed by one tenor vocalist. We are a blend of a baritone and tenor which is quite unusual I think. I also think our lyrics tend to be quite different to the usual, slightly predictable stuff you hear. Not that there's anything wrong with the "lets party all night" type of vibe but I guess we just have too much else we wanna write about.

Tell us about the album "Midnight"?
It's our gorgeous little dark baby!!! We have been writing Midnight over the last few years and we feel like it really represents what our collective lives have been up till now. It's about being in love, falling out of love, lust, the beauty of life, it's about the amazing people we have known and about the friends and loved ones that inspire us every day. We look at it like a collection of stories inspired by our rather night-life orientated lives. It's pretty epic and throbbing, we pulled out some of our slower/down-beat tracks because we realised that what we had created was a dark, beautiful beast and "ballads" just didn't really fit. There's still allot of love & light in there though, but it's love with a pulse!!!

Tell us about the song "Storm"?
We wrote storm when we were living in london. We were living really intense, dramatic and outrageous lives at the time and I think that's reflected in the track. It's a song about obsession, wanting to be the centre of someone's world, someone you would die for. That feeling of wanting to be with that person every breathing moment, when you love someone so much you want to eat them, when you love someone so much you could go mad!

We are in love with the Storm music video, lots of glitter and different looks, tell us about it.
Hahaha, we had allot of fun making it! We wanted to create different types of storms for the clip, with different elements whirling around us. We wanted those elements to represent all the feelings that the song is about. We shot it in the middle of winter in a huge freezing studio in Sydney. The water-storm part of the clip almost killed us!!! But we had such a blast working with Director Tristan Kenyon and cinematographer Tania Lambert - they did such a great job. So glad you guys like it too! XXX

What type of music or artists have influenced on your sound and music?
We have many influences – too many to mention but there are some big ones like David
Bowie, Queen, Scissor Sisters, Icehouse, Grace Jones, Depeche Mode… the list goes
on. We are also inspired by visual art and history ( note tracks like The Great Ascent &
Minoan Queen), as well as fashion and costuming.

Which song or album you've been listening in the last couple of days?
Well it's been Mardi Gras time here in Sydney so there's been allot of Kylie being played but other than that we are loving Florence and the Machine, Monarchy and we are cacking ourselves to Nicki Minaj!!!

What's next for Divine Knights.
More Sydney gigs (about to go rehearse for tonight's gig as we speak!), A TV appearance and we are looking at a tour later in the year... All very exciting! So thanks for having us Be Pop! We are loving you right now. XXX
